| MCC Grows Champions! Justin Smith, son of MCC owners Pam and Chip Acker competed in the US Open Local Qualifier at Cherokee CC in Madison yesterday. Justin scored even par on the first nine holes, then struggled with a few wayward shots on the back where he had to take three penalty strokes. But he battled back to only 2 over par for the round as he stood on the 18th tee. If he makes a birdie on the hole, he qualifies, if he pars the hole, he is in a playoff for the last spot. We (Chip caddying) decided that going for birdie was the plan to follow. Justin chose a driver off the tee on the 440 yard dogleg right par 4. Unfortunately the ball hit the top of a tree on the dogleg and fell down into a very poor lie. Half the ball resting under the surface of the rough in a hole, with a clump of mud and roots in front of it. Justin knew birdie was needed so he decided to try the punch shot from 180 yards out from under the trees. The ball jumped off the club at a funny angle because of the very poor lie, causing it to hit a tree in front of him and bounce into a hazard. A triple bogey 7 was the result of this bad break. We are very proud of him for putting himself into the position to qualify, and for fighting hard all day with some of the best golf shots I (Chip) have ever seen hit. Good job Justin, next time the ball will bounce the right way...it all evens out. |
